BCVS opened at Willingdon and Canada Way in Burnaby in 1960. British Columbia’s first permanent trades school taught carpentry, welding, and aviation maintenance. The BCIT was announced a year later. Its principal was appointed in 1962. In 1964, 498 students studied engineering, business, and health. Graduation began in 1966.

Enrollment reached 3,200 in 1975. In 1977, BCIT opened a campus on Richmond’s Sea Island. BCIT Alumni Association was founded in 1979. A year later, the BCVS and Haney Educational Centre joined together to form the Pacific Vocational Institute (PVI).

BCIT absorbed Pacific Marine Training Institute’s nautical engineering programs in 1994. 1996 saw the first Environmental Engineering B.Tech. BCIT’s Downtown Vancouver campus opened in 1997 to provide part-time programming.
